Aim: A literature review on the role of ultrasonics in mordern endodontic practice.
Background: Bio mechanical preparation of the root canal is considered to be the most important phase in endodontic therapy by many. This step involves the removal of the organic remnants of the pulp chamber and shaping of the walls of the root canal to ensure complete filling of the root canal space. Several new techniques and instrumentations have been introduced in recent times to improve the outcome of endodontic therapy. Ultrasonics is one such technique which uses ultrasonic waves to increase the efficacy of biomechanical instrumentation. Ultrasonics has gained increasing popularity in edodontics for cleaning and shaping of canals difficult to access, endodontic surgery and removal of intracanal materials.
